Book Report

The book titled The Professor and the Mad populace: A history of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester published in 1998 is a story of a brilliant man who participated in the making of the Oxford English Dictionary. The portion William Chester small fry was a doctor, a scholar, and a lunatic- all in unmatchable. As a child, Dr. Minor was very intelligent and worldly informed. He grew up in another country learning different langu long times and cultural backgrounds. It was in his adolescence that his mental health began to change. He focused on the books to aliment his mind from taking over his desires which led him to be a great doctor. He furthered his sights to words and had variety of adult experiences one of which eventually led to his downfall. There seems to be many factors that could submit led him to the state which he fell into. Simon Winchester showed that a man can be brilliant even with disabilities. He introduces the character as a child and progresses to show examples of Minors episodes of his disability from childhood sexual obsession to the slow deteriorations of his wondrous mind.

Throughout the book, Winchester shows a consistency of his character progression, but he keeps the reading very suspenseful and keeps the readers guessing as to what could fox caused the main characters madness.
