The Fate Of King Oedipus Essay Research free essay sample

The Fate Of King Oedipus Essay, Research Paper Jeremy Todd English 122 4/5/97 The Fate of King Oedipus In # 8220 ; King Oedipus # 8221 ; there comes a point in the drama where Oedipus learns something that plays an of import function throughout the drama. He learns from a prophet that he will finally kill his ain Father and slumber with his ain female parent. As one could conceive of this is a daze to Oedipus, and he does non believe the prophet. However, he can non command any of this from go oning because it is his destiny. He is a victim of fortunes beyond his control. Oedipus has no control on the result of what happens in his life because his life had already been planned by the Grecian Gods. Throughout the whole drama there are mentions made to many of the ancient Greek Gods, for illustration, Apollo, Zeus, Dionysis, and Artemis are discussed rather frequently. In ancient Greece the people believed that if anything happened one of the God # 8217 ; s had a ground for it. Each God was related to one specific thing like Poseidon being the God of the sea. They thought that if there was a tidal moving ridge or a hurricane it was because Poseidon was angry at them. This is the footing for my premise that Oedipus had no control over his destiny. First of wholly, when Oedipus is merely a babe his male parent, King Laius of Thebes, is told in an prophet that his ain boy will kill him. So, with the understanding of his married woman, Jocasta, the babe # 8217 ; s pess are pinioned, and it # 8217 ; s given to a slave who is supposed to go forth it to decease on Mt. Cithaeron. However, the slave feels sorry for the babe, and gives it to a fellow shepherd from Corinth. The shepherd from Corinth presented the babe to the childless King of Corinth, who is Polybus, and he brings him up as his ain. He gives him the name Oedipus, which means conceited pes, because of his malformation. This shows how the God # 8217 ; s had already intended for his life to be. He had no manner to command what his parents did to him after he was born. Then, 18 old ages subsequently, he leaves Corinth for Delphi, to look into on his parenthood at the prophet of Apollo. The prophet, though, gives him a horrific anticipation. Which is that he will kill his male parent and slumber with his female parent, which are the two most impossible offense in a Grecian household. After hearing this he flees Corinth and caputs toward Thebes believing to of left his male parent behind in instance the prophet was right. However, the God Apollo has slightly tricked him. Since he believes that his existent male parent is Polybus, but he does non yet know that his male parent is the King of Thebes, which is where he is traveling. Along the manner he meets an old adult male driving a waggon of slaves at a topographic point where three roads run into, and he so precedes to kill him. Old ages pass after this incident, during which clip he becomes King of Thebes, marries Jocasta ( his female parent ) , and male parents four kids by her. Slowly, Thebes becomes engulfed by a hideous pestilence, which kills animate beings, kids, and harvests. Oedipus, being the brave male monarch he is, promises to salvage his metropolis. Since pestilences are caused by pollution, and the pollution is caused by sins the Gods are the lone one # 8217 ; s who can uncover it # 8217 ; s cause. Oedipus sends his brother-in-law, Creon, to see the prophet at Delphi once more, and the God # 8217 ; s answer is that the pestilence was caused due to an unpunished liquidator. That being the liquidator of Laius. He so places a awful expletive on the liquidator whomever it is, and so looks for aid from Teiresias, the respected prophesier. She tells him that he is the slayer, and she hints at even worse offenses. Oedipus is enraged at what she tells him, and thinks that Teiresias and Creon have made this up to dethrone him. Teiresias departs with menaces of her life while Creon implore his artlessness. Oedipus does non believe him, and would hold had him executed if non for Jocasta. After hearing that the statement was the consequence of what an prophet had told them she reassures Oedipus by stating that what the prophets say is bunk. She so tells a narrative of how her and Laius were told by one that their boy would kill his male parent. She so tells him how the male parent was killed by robbers at a topographic point where three roads meet. Then Oedipus remembers that he killed a adult male at a topographic point like this and admirations if it was Laius. He realizes that this would do him the cursed liquidator who is to fault for the pestilence of Thebes. Jocasta pleads with Oedipus that a informant said it was stealers, and that it could non hold been him. Oedipus wants this informant to be found so that his frights can be laid to rest. During this clip a courier arrives to state Oedipus that his male parent, the King of Corinth, has died and that he is now the King of Corinth every bit good. Oedipus is saddened by this event, but tells the courier that he can non return to Corinth while his female parent is still alive. Then the courier attempts to assist himself out by stating Oedipus that she was non truly his female parent, nor was Polybus his male parent. He so explains to them that Oedipus was given to him by a shepherd from Thebes. Jocasta so realizes that Oedipus is genuinely her boy and rushes off. Meanwhile Oedipus believes that she is embarrassed that her hubby might hold been an unwanted kid, and possibly he was the boy of a slave. At last the Theban shepherd arrives, and this is dry because turned out to be the adult male who was the informant to the slaying of Laius. The shepherd is loath to state Oedipus anything. Not until after a menace of anguish does he state Oedipus that the babe was given to him by Jocasta to be killed, and that he passed it on to the Corinthian out of commiseration. Oedipus now cognizing the truth hastes to happen Jocasta, but unfortunately, it was to late. She had already hanged herself. Oedipus so takes the shoulder pins from her frock and gouges his eyes out with them blinding himself. From this bad luck Creon becomes King, and after leting Oedipus to state adieu to his girls, orders him into the house, to expect disposal at the God # 8217 ; s pleasance. As Oedipus enter the house he is continually stating that he should be left to decease on Mt. Cithaeron merely as the Gods intended for him to. As one can see, the God # 8217 ; s played with the lives and emotions of all the characters in the drama. While making so Oedipus could in no manner command his ain destiny. The God # 8217 ; s mislead him, and did non let him to maintain from his fate. Oedipus was so a victim. A victim of fortunes beyond his control, and it merely goes to demo that it is impossible for person to get away their ain destiny. 337

In the Shadow of Man essays

In the Shadow of Man essays In this paper I am going to discuss how anthropology is a science. I am also going to explain how Jane Goodall is a scientist with her works with chimpanzees, and how that is known as primatology. I will also look at the order primates in correspondence with Jane Goodalls book on primates, specifically the chimpanzee. Anthropology is a science; it has four aspects in which you can study. Anthropology takes a look at humankind and with its subdiciplines you can break down individual societies into four parts. Physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and cultural anthropology; allows you to break down specific things in a culture, past, present, and to make predictions about thing in the future. Empirical data is also important because the objects that they study are what make anthropology a science. Anthropology is a social science similar to sociology, psychology, and economics. What they learn and observe is taken from research. For example an archaeologist will search through ancient empirical data and observe what they find, to evaluate and note how one thing relates to another. Anthropology being a science uses the scientific method to evaluate data that they have found or have observed, where in science a hypothesis is created and then somehow a theory is made. In taking a theory it sometimes can be wrong and afterwards will be changed to fit the new standard, which is an ongoing process. This could be known as the scientific process. In the book, In the Shadow of Man, Jane Goodall, specifically deals with primatology. Primatology is the study of primates. She studies, observes, and finally is accepted by the chimpanzees at the Gombe Stream, therefore, becomes a primatologist. In doing this she describes how she took notes and recorded her findings and observations throughout her day. Then she tells us how, during endless nights, she would retype her findings to be clearer. She describes these ...

Critical Roads into Volpone Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Critical Roads into Volpone - Essay Example For instance, â€Å"Just as Dantes hell is the spiritual inverse of heaven, Jonsons Venice is the moral inverse of every humanistic ideal which, as outlined in his poem† (Baker and Harp n.p.). Despite holding different opinions on morality, both authors believed in punishment of evil as demonstrated in their works. One weakness in Baker and Harp’s argument is that they fail to demonstrate the two works as comedies. Their argument that the story of Gianni Schicci evokes a comical effect is not sufficient. Furthermore, their attempt to classify the two works as comedies is inadequate. Their commentary requires more illustrations. One word that I recognized but had to look up to clarify was ‘Augur’ meaning a religious official in the ancient Rome who observed and interpreted natural signs as an indication of divine approval or disapproval of a proposed decision or action. Global Business Environment - Case Study Example P&G started as a small soap and candle company started by William Proctor and James Gamble in the year 1837 in the Cincinnati United States now has 138,000 employees working in over 80 countries worldwide. The company’s products and services are available to consumers over 180 countries. The company maintains one of the strongest and largest portfolios of trusted brands.  The company markets nearly 300 well-known brands in consumer goods and more than 50 percent of its revenues are derived from foreign countries. Being the market leader in the FMCG market P&G has proved to be one of the aggressive marketers and the largest advertiser in the world. Extensive market research and the novel brand-management system are the unique strengths of the company (Proctor & Gamble).  The success of P&G largely depended on its business technique called ‘brand management’ which implied that the company will focus its attention on a product rather than on a business function. The technique involves a decentralized decision making. The company began its global expansion during the early 1990s when the top management felt the need for streamlining the brand management system. For carrying out a planned expansion the company established a ‘Global Strategic Planning Group’ consisting of 3-20 individuals for each of the product categories. This group was made responsible for developing policies covering global and local brands. The group was also empowered to make decisions concerning ‘brand strategy’ which needs to be standardized across the world markets. It also involved customizing the products according to local markets and customer requirements.  While developing the branding strategies was made the responsibility of the Global Strategic Planning Group the implementation of the strategies was entrusted to the ‘Global Category Team’. The Global Category Team is headed by an executive vice president who handles eac h of the product categories.

ASSIGNMENT REPORT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

ASSIGNMENT REPORT - Essay Example The Forbes Spar store had a 5 percent annual growth. The rapid increase in the number of employee recruitment led to many part time workers. So as to instil efficiency, there was need to develop training programs for the organization. We are currently living in an information age where organizations are routinely valued not only on their physical aspect but on their intellectual capital. Training is one of the main channels of maintaining and improving the intellectual capital, thereby the quality of the training affects the value of the organization. The untrained or poorly trained employees significantly cost more to support than the well-trained employees do.   Training and development is way of motivating the staff in any organization. This is because motivation is what makes people to have that drive to do something thus the driving force of human behaviour. As a result it initiates, guides and maintain the goal oriented behaviours hence motivation it is what drives one to tak e a cause of action. The forces work towards motivation can either be social, biological, emotional or cognitive in nature (Laubly, 2005:6). The process of making decisions include; Defining or identifying the problems faced by the management, having an analysis of the problem, development of alternative solutions, choosing the best solution out of the available alternatives, conversion of the decision into action, and lastly ensuring feedback for the follow-up. It is from this diagnosis that a training program is initiated (Bouyssou, Dubois, & Prade, 2010:25). Training has numerous importance and they include: Workers are helped to focus and also priority is placed on empowering them; the bottom line is positively affected by increasing production; the confidence of the employee is built, developing and keeping the key performers, enabling of team development, and also contributing to better morale of the organization; there is a significant better delivery of customer service by a llowing employees to be kept current on the latest job related information; employees get updates on the new and enhanced skills with an aim of aligning them to the goals and objectives of the business; in case of downsizing in the organization, the remaining staff are braced with the management and technical skills to handle the increased workloads; there is financial gain as the processes increases efficiency; those companies with business related problems are given an unbiased or fresh professional opinion or critique or evaluation; employee turnover is reduced by increasing job satisfaction, morale, and employee motivation; innovation is also increased bringing in new strengths to existing strategies, products, and the capacity of the company to adopt new technologies and methods (Ekot, 2010). The survey was quantitative in design which consisted of 20 questions in total; these questions were handed out to 30 employees, the questions were closed with set response format and this was to enable a rapid completion of the questionnaire and encourage employee’s response. However lack of response and feedback forced me to ask employees to attend a group meeting. The group discussion found that the staff were not being given enough training or training was not being offered in the areas like technical faults, tobacco sales, food safety while putting items into correct bags, handling of fuel, full pay point training, taking the customer to the product, security issues, and the

Milk collection Cost In the above section as it is mentioned that they are processing the milk by collecting it from other sources so obviously this will cost them a lot so this could be their weakness that they have to bear the cost of collection as well. On the other hand if they have their own dairy form near to processing centers then they can cut their this kind of cost. Packaging As we know that they are selling tetra pack milk so they must have their own tetra pack plant but in the mean while they are dependent on tetra pack company because that is the only option avaible to them if in case they increase the price then they have to increase their price for ultimate consumer which is their weakness that they always depend on tetra pack for their packaging. Threats The threats for Shakarganj Good Milk are as follows: Competition There is always having threat from competitors same like good milk having the treat from their competitors because they are stronger in terms of finance and everything. Competition always creates a threat because everyone wants to be a market leader and to get maximum shares. Others brands are serving in the market from so long so they have more market share as compare to good milk. Good milk is facing strong competition which is the biggest threat to them. Price Differentials As we know that other companies are very strong so they have strong influence in the market like they can provide goods in cheap rates then good milk because big corporations having more leverage in terms of profit. Consumer preferences As this is a not so big company so obviously they cannot invest huge more capital but on the other hand consumers preferences changing over the time. Sometimes consumers purchasing power get lower and sometime they need some different taste so company has to cope with every situation. PEST Analysis Political Factor: Political environment always influencing the organizations same is the case with good milk political condition in Pakistan is not constant. They keep on changing every day so its directly influencing the matters of company. Due to unstable government there is no law and order regarding consumer rights and the tax structure is not defined in well manner so ultimately consumer is effecting from this conditions. Economic Factor: As we all know that economic crises going on, in the world so economic conditions in Pakistan are not fruitful as well. Banks increase their interest rates so company is getting loans with high interest rates so ultimately they will be serving with high rates in market. Un-employment is also increasing day by day and the purchasing power of consumer going down so company have to sell their products with affordable price where as on the other hand cost is increasing because of high rate of inflation. Social Factors Population of Pakistan is increasing so company has more opportunity to sell their products because milk is the basic necessity of life. In Pakistan most people prefer to buy fresh milk rather than pasteurize milk. There is no specific choice for consumers that they want to buy foreign product or not but still high income level community wants to buy foreign or some renowned brand and low ones go for the cheaper and affordable products. Technological Factors Technology factors always impact on the success of the organization. Technology enables the product innovation and makes services at good standard. This factor decreases the chances of unhygienic milk and provides better quality of milk. Good milk can store milk for long term with the help of modern nutrition machines and fresh milk will be available for consumer. Through technology organization can easy communicate directly and indirectly with consumers and within the organization. Organization can increase the dairy milk process and dry milk process technology. Conclusion In the net shell we can say that company is having strong position but as compare to other companies their financial position is lower than others so they should increase their financial position by doing more investments to increase earnings. Company having more opportunities for the market because market is expending so they have more market space. Company should overcome their weakness and make them strength in future so that they can cope with market every time. Lago, The Plotter Essay -- Literary Analysis

Othello is a steadfast leader that the reader finds him or herself wanting to be more like. His experiences are unparalleled and that’s what makes him such a popular leader. He has seen many battles and fought many fights; his stories are legendary among those who revere him. In our day he would be the man every man wants to be like and the man every woman wants, but even those who are revered have enemies. If this were not the case then there would be no means for him to have become so revered. In overcoming so many obstacles Othello made a most convincing enemy. In this article we will explore Iago’s dark secrets and expose and examine what makes him such a great villain. William Shakespeare used various literary devices such as characterization, metaphors, irony, and symbols to portray Iago as a cunning villain. Shakespeare’s acute use of characterization sets a great opposition between the protagonist and the antagonist. Iago, Shakespeare’s villain, is quite the opposite as our protagonist Othello. Upon being confronted, swords drawn, Othello says, â€Å"Keep up your bright swords, for the dew will rust them. Good Signior, you shall more command with years than with your weapons.† Othello’s sense of diplomacy set him apart as a distinguished gentleman before a soldier. Telling the soldiers to lower their swords eases the tension and creates for an opening to a peaceful solution. To further demonstrate Othello’s devotion to diplomacy he asks Barbantio, â€Å"Where will you that I go to answer this your charge?† When Barbantio answers, â€Å"To prison,† Othello complies by saying, â€Å"What if I obey? How may the duke be therewith satisfied?† (Shakespeare 16) These are just a few examples of Othello’s obedience and how his act ions distinguish ... ...gonism. Characterization was used to emphasize Othello’s gentlemen like nature and noble soldier status, while to the contrary, Iago’s actions defined him as a conniving saboteur. These differences create a tension that stresses the good in our protagonist and the bad in our antagonist. Metaphors were used by Iago that showed his manipulative pattern of malice. A subtle placement of irony extenuates our negative perceptions of Iago. Symbolism was a crucial role in Othello, this may have been the crown jewel of literary devices used to demonstrate that Iago was a great villain in the play Othello. Symbolism was the device that this whole play hinged on. Were it not for the handkerchief and the inherent symbolism Othello would have played out very differently. Works Cited Shakespeare, William. My Ideal Class Essay

Lots of people will say this when ask them what can help you learn better or what is your ideal class â€Å"no teachers to teach us and we can use our phones whenever we want, we can just chill and sleep.† However, students never think about the consequences of that. Everyone in our class are going to have a lot problems, so we must need our great teacher to help us. My ideal study environment would be somewhere quiet and comfortable where I have all my materials I need on hand. but I do like to have some kind of relaxing background noise because I can’t stand sitting in silence. Usually the best time to study for me is on class, because I can learn a lot of things by listening to what the teacher says. I would like to have between ten to fifteen students in all my classrooms. That is because the less the students, the more time the teacher can help all students individually. This will help me be a better students, with smaller classrooms students will have the chance to communicate with every student in the class and I will also learn more. My personal learning style is online researching and it works really well for me. My personal learning style works out very well for me with my study habits because it involves a lot of typing and somehow I think typing is A LOT better than writing. If all of our homework can be hand in by using computer will be best for me.

The Crucible How does Tension build into Hysteria in Act III Essay Example

The Crucible How does Tension build into Hysteria in Act III Essay Example The Crucible How does Tension build into Hysteria in Act III Paper The Crucible How does Tension build into Hysteria in Act III Paper The Crucible contains many events that which precede the madness that ensues by the end of the play. Tension builds into Hysteria in several ways in Act III. The stage directions at the beginning of act III bring the audience straight into a heavy tense atmosphere. Adjectives like solemn and forbidding make the room seem oppressive; Miller uses a sense of realism to invoke the unforgiving atmosphere of the general court. Much of the Hysteria is built up in the crowd of towns people due to their extreme fear of witchcraft. This Hysteria off stage is often upheaval from the residents of Salem this also contributes to the chaos seen at the end of the play. Voices of towns people rise in excitement There is a great imbalance of power even corruption in the courthouse with most of the power with Judge Hawthorne, dep. Governor Danforth and Rev. Parris . They can always avoid questioning due to their position and if ever questioned they call contempt of court. Also there are many judges and people associated with the court but few complaints. Desperate pleas come from Giles and Francis to save their respected wives from prosecution are systematically crushed and indicate the lack of reason from the judges eager to annihilate all possible signs of witchcraft Martha Corey: I know not what a witch is. Hathorne: How do you know, then, you are not a witch, into this comes Proctor challenging the court leaving him with a low prospect of success. Events that reduce John Proctors credibility increase tension from the start of the court house scene the audience is on Proctors side and emotionally want him to succeed as he is trying to do the right thing and put a stop to the injustice. Revelations soon arise about his character Parris: Such a Christian that will not come to church but once in a month! Cheever: He plough on Sunday, lower Proctors credibility and raise tension. If he is shown not to be a good Gospel Christian, in the strong Puritan town of Salem, he will also be seen as a dishonest, unlawful person giving him no chance of the court believing him. Giles Corey lowers the tension briefly bringing evidence to the court in the form of a disposition proving that his accusation against Mr. Thomas Putnam is true, that he accuses people of witchery in order to buy up their land once they are jailed or put to hang. A more modern version of this being the McCarthy trials of the 1950s. McCarthy used the fear of an attack by the Communist Soviet Union to build up hype in order to develop his career people were tried for treason if accused of having connections with the party this lead to people beginning to scapegoat each other. Tension rises again after Mary warrens confession. It was proved that she has lied at some stage and committed perjury a jail able offense. The entrance of Abigail increases the tension once again as Abigail says that Elizabeth Proctor keeps poppets meaning Johns wife may have used some sort of voodoo against Abigail because Abigail was found stabbed with a dagger along with a poppet with a needle in it seemingly making her appear evil lowering Johns credibility yet again. What Abigail does is could quite easily seen as mob psychology, she manipulates the hysteria of the crowd to for fill her own desires she always manages to avoid questioning by saying nothing or not answering If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again but in this case by turning the question around and warning even threatening Danforth when asked are the spirits she had been claiming to see were illusion only before claiming to see spirits in the room Let you beware Mr. Danforth. Think you be so mighty that the power of hell may not turn your wits? When Proctor first enters the court he speaks reasonably, restrained of all his fears, his anger his anxiety I would ask you to remember, sir, while you read it, that until two weeks ago she were no different than the other children are today. however by this stage he has lost all of his composure he goes from making rational points to hysterical outbursts (breathless and in agony! ) It is a whore! this is probably due to the fact he is putting his own neck on the line. At this stage the tension for the audience goes down as there is a chance that Abigail might get found out although John is near hysterical. John is questioned one final time about everything that has already been said before Elizabeth enters to answer whether or not Abigail had an affair with John not knowing John has already confessed to the General court to expose the truth this rises tension bringing it to a pinnacle either John or Abigail will be ruined at this point. Elizabeth lies though, to save Johns reputation so he is not found to be an adulterer. Elizabeth is removed and for the second time Abigail claims to see spirits and from this point onwards there is sheer hysteria. At the very end Hale decides to quit the court after loosing his importance from when he arrived in Salem believing that there may be evil at work there to at the end of the scene where he believes Proctor and that the truth has become hazy at this point all John had fort for was lost.

Avoiding the Passive Voice in Spanish

Avoiding the Passive Voice in Spanish One of the most common mistakes made by beginning Spanish students who have English as a first language is to overuse passive verb forms. Sentences with passive verbs are very common in English, but in Spanish they arent used very much- especially in everyday speech. Key Takeaways: Spanish Passive Voice Although Spanish has a passive voice, it isnt used as much in Spanish as it is in English. One alternative to the passive voice is to turn it into the active voice. Either explicitly state the subject or use a verb that allows the subject to be implied rather than stated.Another common alternative is to use reflexive verbs. What Is the Passive Voice? The passive voice involves a sentence construction in which the performer of the action isnt stated, and in which the action is indicated by a form of to be (ser in Spanish) followed by a past participle, and in which the subject of the sentence is the one acted upon. If that isnt clear, look at a simple example in English: Katrina was arrested. In this case, it isnt specified who performed the arrest, and the person arrested is the subject of the sentence. The same sentence could be expressed in Spanish using the passive voice: Katrina fue arrestada. But not all English sentences using the passive voice can be translated into Spanish the same way. Take, for example, Jose was sent a package. Putting that sentence in a passive form in Spanish doesnt work. Josà © fue enviado un paquete just doesnt make sense in Spanish; the listener might think at first that Jose was sent somewhere. Also, Spanish has quite a few verbs that simply arent used in the passive form. And still others arent used passively in speech, although you may see them in journalistic writing or in items translated from English. In other words, if you want to translate an English sentence using a passive verb to Spanish, youre usually best off coming up with a different way. Alternatives to the Passive Voice How, then, should such sentences be expressed in Spanish? There are two common ways: recasting the sentence in the active voice and using a reflexive verb. Recasting in the passive voice: Probably the easiest way to translate most passive sentences in Spanish is to change them to the active voice. In other words, make the subject of the passive sentence the object of a verb. One reason for using a passive voice is to avoid saying who is performing the action. Fortunately, in Spanish, verbs can stand alone without a subject, so you dont necessarily have to figure out who is performing the action to revise the sentence. Some examples: Passive English: Roberto was arrested.Active Spanish: Arrestaron a Roberto. (They arrested Roberto.)Passive English: The book was bought by Ken.Active Spanish: Ken comprà ³ el libro. (Ken bought the book.)Passive English: The box office was closed at 9.Active Spanish: Cerrà ³ la taquilla a las nueve. Or, cerraron la taquilla a las nueve. (He/she closed the box office at 9, or they closed the box office at 9.) Using reflexive verbs:  The second common way in which you can avoid the passive voice in Spanish is to use a reflexive verb. A reflexive verb is one in which the verb acts on the subject. An example in English: I saw myself in the mirror. (Me vi en el espejo.) In Spanish, where the context doesnt indicate otherwise, such sentences are often understood in the same way as are passive sentences in English. And like passive forms, such sentences dont clearly indicate who is doing the action. Some examples: Passive English: Apples (are) sold here.Reflexive Spanish:  Aquà se venden las manzanas. (Literally, apples sell themselves here.)Passive English: The box office was closed at 9.Reflexive Spanish: Se cerrà ³ la taquilla a las nueve. (Literally, the box office closed itself at 9.)Passive English: A cough isnt treated with antibiotics.Reflexive Spanish: La tos no se trata con antibià ³ticos. (Literally, the cough doesnt treat itself with antibiotics.) Some of the sample sentences in this lesson could be understandably translated to Spanish in the passive form. But native Spanish speakers dont normally speak that way, so the translations on this page would usually sound more natural. Obviously, you wouldnt use the literal translations above in translating such Spanish sentences to English! Theory of Social Contract Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Theory of Social Contract - Essay Example Hobbes theory of Social Contract ratifies the condition in which individuals give up their individual liberties, in exchange for a common security. In this theory, no limits exist to the natural rights to liberty. Through the social contract, people are able to transfer their mutual rights. According to Hobbes, individuals sacrifice their liberty to the Leviathan because the society in which people are born into has laws and convection that are already in place (Baumgold, 53). Folks have no option but to adhere to the existing limited conventions and laws instead of exploiting their natural unlimited rights. The application of Hobbes’ ideas in the modern society is apt. Its application is important due to many reasons. First, the societies’ population grows rapidly, and there is a need to avail stronger societal norms that can hold people together. Laws are vital in ensuring that the large population of the world coexists in peace. Secondly, the world of today embraces capitalism, which leaves a larger part of the world population grieving in poverty. Without proper policies such as property rights, the poor population can trespass into the property of the rich people. In conclusion, Hobbes reiterates that people tend to sacrifice their natural liberties to the Leviathan because of the pre-existing conventions and property rights that they find in the society. It is important, to reinforce such legislation in the contemporary society to ensure the maintenance of sanity and order amongst the world’s populace.

This is what will be dissertated in the following. This work of Steinbeck's is set in the beautiful area of the Salinas Valley of California, with the primary plot being that of simple people who are struggling to find a place for themselves in the world. There are certain issues which are made rather obvious or blatant, one of those being the tensions between town and country, laborers and owners, past and present. These particular issues can be related to by all, which is why The Long Valley is such a delivering and moralizing literary work. There is a subtle yet purposefully planned relationship between the setting and the characters themselves, which is set in the form of an external and internal landscape, with the setting being external, and the characters being internal. The basis and most important part of this relationship is that the characters each have their own distinctive categorization from each other, all which relate significantly to a different aspect of the landscape setting. From the main characters, Henry and Elisa Allen, to more minor ones such as Peter Randall and his eighty-seven pound wife Emma; Steinbeck obviously took his time in creating each one's separate and diverse yet intriguing and relating characteristics, with a telling story plot in his mind. John Steinbeck is a writer who is notoriously known for his intelligent and well thought out writings, and this work of his is categorized by many as the best of it all.
