Ben Bernanke, an American economist and the current Chairman of the Board of Governors of the federal official Reserve System, was born on December 13, 1953 in Augusta, Georgia. He was raised in Dillion, South Carolina by his mother, Edna and his father, Philip. Philip was a druggist while his wife was a teacher. Shying away from the typical puerility traditions, Bernake instead taught himself calculus. He is the oldest of three siblings, having a younger comrade named Seth and a younger sister named Sharon. Seth is presently a lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina and Sharon is an administrator at Berkley College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. His family was one of the few Jewish families in the area, having immigrated to America on June 30, 1921 thanks to Philip Bernakes father, Jonas and his wife, Pauline. Jonas was born in Boryslav, Austria-Hungary and immigrated to the United States from Pzemysl, Poland.
