T.C. Boyle depicts a fictional story just about social realism in the world. The Tortilla Curtain explores the animateds of two couples armed combat for the American Dream. The first couple, Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher be fighting to hold on to the American Dream. The second couple, Candido and America Rincon are fighting to accept what every American has. Boyle compares the two couples through their living situations, values, and conflicts that from each one of these four people convey to deal with throughout the novel.

They live in a subtile community, Arroyo Blanco. “It was a private community, comprising a golf game course, ten tennis courts, a community center and some two hundred and fifty homes…”(30). Delaney and Kyra have a nice home to live in and they do not have to worry about a place to stay. Delaney, Kyra, and her son Jordon live a comfortable feel, with their nice things and plenty of food to eat. They do not have to worry about where they are release to sleep night to night or what they will be eating because they are a family that has everything they need, or do they?
On the other hand, Candido and America Rincon’s living situation is totally different from Delaney and Kyra. Candido and America have no home and they are living out in the middle of nowhere. They live in a canyon in the California mountains and they have lower-ranking to no food to eat and to cook. “America was cooking something all over the fire. Broth. Meat broth”(21). This proves that Candido and America live a life of poverty and they are practically starving to death. Candido and America do not how much to survive and they do not have a lot of clothing to change into either. America is gravid and she is not eating right or getting the back up she needs.
