Crooks, named for his crooked back, is one of the most vulnerable characters on the ranch, broadly speaking due to his race combined with general racist attitudes at the time. He lives by himself because he is the only disastrous man on the ranch, and he has been so beaten d accept by loneliness and prejudicial treatment of that he is now leery of any kindness he receives. Crooks is painfully aw ar that his uncase color is all that keeps him separate in this culture. This outsider placement causes him to lament his loneliness, still he also delights in eyesight the loneliness of others, perhaps because misery loves company. When Lennie arrives at his room, he turns him away, hoping to tell a point that if he, as a black man, is not allowed in white mens houses, then whites are not allowed in his, but his desire for company ultimately wins out and he invites Lennie to sit with him. Like Curleys married woman, Crooks is disempowered, but turns his vulnerability into a weapon to attack those who are change surface weaker. Crooks begins to pick on Lennie, suggesting George wont come home, and a slight mean streak is exposed that has probably create after being alone for so long. Lennie unwittingly soothes Crooks into spirit at ease, and edulcorate even gets him excited about the fantasy farm.
Crookss little dream of the farm is shattered by Curleys wifes nasty comments, putting the black man right into his place as outclassed to a white woman, somebody already seen as being inferior to everyone else on the ranch to begin with. Crooks refuses to say Curleys wife is wrong, he accepts the fact that he lives with ever-present racial discrimination, and says he had forgotten himself because theyd treated him so well. Crooks self-opinion isnt found on what he believes hes worth, but on knowing that no matter how he feels, others around him pass on always value him as less.
