Imagine being a young soldier, only 19, located in a hostile and remote area. Suddenly, without warning, a Humvee with your fellow soldiers explodes. You draw driven into a massive ambush. Hidden enemy fighters then unleash utensil guns and mortars on you and your fellow combatants. You are the only medic at the scene. You grab your aid bag, get out of your truck and slang your way back to the damaged vehicle through unsafe enemy bullets and mortar fire. The Humvee that exploded containing the soldiers also contains high detonative ammunition. Simultaneously, the explosives began to go off, resembling a fireworks display on the 4th of July. As the firefight rages on, you continue to focus your attention on the two intimately critically injure men. All the while, you were not scared of death; you were scared of failing. With mortars exploding around you and bullets whizzing by, you throw your body over the wounded soldiers to protect them. Because of your heroic actions, two soldiers are alive today. Your original officers have recommended that you be allowed the Silver Star, the militarys highest award for outstanding bravery. Thus, the view of women as property has changed to allow them to protect themselves as well as others, not only be protected.
Although things have seemed to change, they have changed ever so slowly. Many feel that adding women to site combat would not be beneficial. They believe that women physically and emotionally are just not capable of the stamina and aggressiveness that is an essential component for direct combat. If men feel in combat that they are in a position of impuissance because of their combatants, trust is lost, resentment builds, and units self-destruct (Restrictions, 2).
