What is sinlessness? Is it commodity? Is it something we retain our whole life? Harper Lees novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is story that shows how the diminishing of innocence can buoy positively affect a character in the end. This is do through Lees use of character teaching to show how Jean Louise guide Finch, Jeremy Atticus Jem Finch and Boo Radleys experiences have stolen outside(a) their innocence but changed their characters for the better.
Scout Finch, peradventure the most prominent character in the book, is introduced as an bonnie 9 year experienced tomboy in the fancied city of Maycomb, Alabama. Scout acts as a third party bystander to the events that occur within Maycomb, and these events help her better her comprehension and familiarity of the realities that surround her. With this burst of knowledge and awareness, she consequently starts to lose her innocence, and her electrical condenser for understanding and empathy increases. For example, Atticus (Scouts father) tells nine year old Scout to stop fighting in rail because she has a reputation for picking fights with other students. One day Cecil Jacobs, the school bully, confronts Scout and says that [Scouts] daddy was a disgrace an that nigger[s] oughta hang from the water-tank!(79).
Scout is less than pleased with this, but remembers what Atticus had told her, so she drop[s] [her] fists and walk[s] away (79). Scouts maturity increases from this bold decision to set free and forget, but her innocence slowly parts with her for another reason. At this point in the novel, Scout is starting to become undetermined to the cruel reality surrounding her; the segregation amongst blacks and whites. The script nigger is introduced to her and she starts to become aware of the invisible boundary between the two colours; the whites reigning transcendence over the blacks.
