The first scaffold scene introduces all the main characters of the book. The first part of the scene is Hester climbing up the ladder, guardianship Pearl, the result of her sin. Explaining why Hester has the scarlet letter and what it means to receive the scarlet letter for the rest of her life.
When the young women- the mother of this child- stood in full revealed before the drive, it seemed to be her first impulse to clasp the babe closely to her bosom; not so much by an impulse of motherly affection, as that she might thereby hold off a certain toke, which was wrought or fastened into her dress. In a min, however, wisely judging another, she took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her town and neighbors, (pg. 6).
When on the scaffold Hester sees Chillingworth, her husband, coming from England, gestures to Hester to not reveal his identity, then turns to a stranger in the crowd to ask about Hesters crime and punishment.
… Dreadful as it was, she was conscious of a shelter in the presence of these gee witnesses. It was better to stand thus, with so many betwixt him and her, than to recognise him, face to face, they two alone. She fled for refuge, as it were, to the public exposure, and dreaded the moment when its protection should be withdrawn from her… (pg. 16).
