Running For Courage

In chapters seven, eight, and nine, of the Red Badge of Courage by Stephen put out the main character, hydrogen Fleming, is wrestling with his conscience, guilt, shame, and whether or not he is courageous. Guilt is the main emotion that Henry is wrestling with; throughout these chapters he projects his feelings of guilt onto inanimate objects which he then perceives to be judging him. In chapter seven Henry has just run from the battle and is making his way through the forest looking for a place of peace where he can rest and realize his mind. However, when he does find this place of peace he is confronted with a lifeless solider. Henry comes into the clearing and sees the ground is brown and in that location is a half religious light (Crane 85). The dead solider is propped against a tree; this position seems more like that of a brio public than one who is distinctly deceased. Henry meets the look of the dead creation with his own and it seems that the man is looking at him.

Henry is clearly looking into eyes that are void of life and judgment, just that is not what his mind is seeing. The dead man and the living man exchanged a long look (Crane 85). Dead men cannot see nor can they share looks with anyone, but Henry can see the eyes and perceives that they are also seeing him. The eyes of the solider sitting so life-like against the tree show Henry that he is not alone in his running, or maybe worsened that he is very alone in his cowardess.
