Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeares most famous characters. When Lady Macbeth is first introduced she is already plotting Duncans murder. She knows she is stronger, more ambitious and more ruthless than her preserve and knows she will have to push Macbeth into following through with the murder. In act 1, Lady Macbeth wishes she were not a women so she could erase Duncan herself. Come not you spirits that tend on virulent thoughts, unsex me here (Act 1, tantrum 5, lines 43-44). She believes only men can shoot down, and wishes she was a man because she knows her husband will not kill Duncan on his own.
Lady Macbeth is consumed with the idea of having power and she is so dire that she is considering murder herself. She manipulates Macbeth with unbelievable effectiveness. When Macbeth hesitates to commit the murder, she questions his manhood repeatedly until he feels that he must commit the murder to prove himself as a man. When you durst do it so you were a man [Act 1, scene 7 line 54]. Even though we know of Macbeths strength on the battlefield, Lady Macbeth taunts him for his lack of courage and plays upon Macbeths insecurities. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that she would rather kill a baby then break a promise.
