Shakespeare’s play ‘Othello’ depicts many themes. The roles of women in patriarchal 16th century Shakespearian society were much suppressed.
This is shown are the very ancestor of the play when Brabantio (Desdemona’s father) learns that his beautiful daughter has run outside and married the noble ‘moor’ Othello (Commander), when he is aware of this he questions Othello this, “Where hast thou stowed away my daughter”. Brabantio rehearses this senseless imagery to depict that his daughter is more a possession than a fair sex and a daughter this ultimately shows that women’s roles were suppressed. There are other characters in the play which are depicted in the play to have suppressed roles, one of them is Emilia. She also shows ‘us’ as the viewers that women’s roles were suppressed.
