The Inescapable Cycle

Racism and poverty are cardinal issues that the humankind faces on a daily basis. Too often the two problems play off of one a nonher and create til now bigger issues. The continuous cycle of racial tension and fiscal struggle creates a seemingly endless conflict. Poverty house go way beyond third world countries and racial discrimination is seen between different races all over the world. The broader meaning of these two familiar concepts applies to many areas and people in our world today. In Spike Lee’s Do the Right subject (1989), the viewer is able to see racial discrimination between legion(predicate) groups in the impoverished urban setting of Brooklyn. The film whole kit to open the eyes of the viewers to the severity of racial tensions in an urban neighborhood and the effects this may open on poverty. The examples of poverty depicted in the film are not immediately apparent and it is not until poverty is coupled with racism that the viewer can begin to see the effects it has on the neighborhood. Racial tensions prevent a community from working together and create an inescapable cycle that sustains poverty.




Do the Right subject begins by introducing the viewer to Mookie, Spike Lee’s character, and his financially stable sister, Jade, who he lives with. Mookie then
leaves for his job at Sal’s Famous Pizzeria as the delivery boy where he is the only

black employee. At the restaurant, Mookie’s friend, Buggin’ Out, becomes outraged when he notices that the pizzeria owner, Sal, does not have any pictures of blacks on his “ b localize of Fame.” The two argue and eventually Buggin’ Out is thrown out and
